Is It The Computer Or The Internet Causing The Speed Issue?

Having internet or computer issues with your windows running slow? The best way to find out the real problem is to eliminate the things that could be causing it… besides the computer itself. If you start with easy things to turn off or disconnect you can at least feel sure they are not part of the problem.

Some of these maybe the external hardware, especially your printer. If your printer is a multi-task unit with printing, scanning, copying and faxing it could be causing more of a problem than you think. Turn it off and unplug its USB plug from the computer. Reboot the computer to “turn off” any printer programs running and see if it helps. You may still see a pop-up telling you it can’t find the printer.

Your internet connection could be a problem or part of a problem. But this is easy to determine. First close your web browser. Then do several functions at one time such as opening a PDF document, playing music or a DVD and opening a large picture file with it set to large icons will show if windows is running slow or not.

These actions will tax the processor and if your computer is as fast as it should be doing these actions then your problem is outside of the PC’s capacity. Now, if the internet is still slow then you need to look there.

You can do an actual speed test online that will tell you if the Internet Service Provider has a speed problem in your area. Do a search for “internet speed test” and you will find several of these offered for free. You don’t even have to give it any information. It will detect and ping your computer and have the results in less than a minute. It will give you upload and download speeds, which are completely separate from each other, and tell you if your speed is slower than average.

If you don’t have internet speed issues you may need to look at router or wireless problems. Also your modem could be the culprit. At this point you would need to contact your ISP’s technical support and they can run tests and determine what is causing your problem.
